Replicable Lessons from the STRYDESelf-Employment Program in Rural East Africa

With 10 million+ young Africans entering the workforce each year, many youth will have to create their own jobs. Since 2011, TechnoServe and the MasterCard Foundation’s Strengthening Rural Youth Development through Enterprise (STRYDE) program has trained more than 68,000 youth across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda to identify market opportunities, build personal skills and confidence, and launch profitable businesses in their communities. To ensure sustainability, the program also taught 124 local institutions how to train youth in the STRYDE methodology.

Now in its final year, STRYDE will share the most important, replicable lessons from this landmark initiative: how youth build their own optimal mix of income through agriculture, microenterprise, and jobs; the components of a strong “aftercare” program; the challenges of scaling an approach through local partners, and many more.
